Re-writing Opera for a Modern World

In a modern world, should operas and dramas be re-written? Florence’s Teatro del Maggio seems to think so. To highlight the ongoing battle to stop violence against women in Italy, they recently performed an altered Bizet’s Carmen recently to mixed reviews. In this version, written by Italian director Leo Muscato, Carmen no longer dies at the hand of her rejected lover. See the Associated Press article here for details.
